One of the first games which comes to mind as a "children's game" is the game of Bingo. The game of Bingo uses a square board with 25 marked spaces. At the top of the board, horizontally across the top row of squares, the word Bingo is spelled out, indicating the letter corresponding with a vertical row. All twenty five squares are marked with a particular number, and depending on which version of Bingo is being played, matching four or five numbers with the corresponding letter which is called will earn the player a "Bingo". It is generally believed the game of Bingo originated with the Italians as a type of lottery game. The Italians adapted the game, and it is still played in Italy every Saturday. From Italy, the French adapted the game more still, as well as the Germans where it was first used to teach children spelling and math skills. The game Bingo was introduced to the United States in the late 1920's as a county fair game called "Beano" in which numbered discs were drawn from a cigar box at the county fair, and people placed beans on their cards to mark their corresponding numbers. The winner called out "beano" when they had won. In the 1930's, a Catholic priest decided to use the game of Bingo as means of raising funds for churches. Today it is estimated that roughly $90 million dollars are spent in Bingo halls annually. The reason the game Bingo is so popular throughout the world is that anybody can play. It is strictly a game of chance, in which no skill is required, except the ability to possibly view numerous cards in short periods of time. Anybody, from children to seniors, can play the game of Bingo if they can recognize numbers and letters. During the current unstable economic situation, Bingo is becoming more and more popular among adults. Monies which would normally be used for luxury items such as clothing, tobacco, and alcohol, is being put in smaller portions toward an entry into Bingo contests. Even if a player never wins bingo , it is a pastime which requires minimal money to be spent, but can be fun and entertaining for a whole evening. It is an inexpensive resource for schools, in order to teach children their numbers and letters, as well as some friendly competition and probability. The game of Bingo thrives during times of an uncertain economy. Bingo has been around in one form or another since the 16th century in Europe, and will continue to thrive for centuries to come. This enthralling game of chance allows for just about anybody to be able to play, which makes it fun for singles, couples, or the whole family.
